Major Incident at Manitoba Prison leaves one dead and many injured

On July 17th, an altercation occurred involving many inmates from the medium-security sector at the Stony Mountain Institution.

This altercation left seven assault victims who were then evaluated by correctional staff at the facility and transported to an outside hospital if needed. There were no staff members injured during the altercation.

As a result of the incident, an inmate passed in the correctional facility’s custody. The inmate, whose name was Colton Patchinose, had been serving a sentence in the facility since April 21, 2011. He was charged with First Degree Murder, Attempted Murder, Use of a Firearm, Assault Peace Officer and Aggravated Assault. Someone known to Patchinose had been notified.

The altercation is currently under investigation by the facility and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The death is under review by the Canadian Securities Institute (CSC) as per protocol.
