Jim Carr, Former Liberal Cabinet Minister, Dies at 71

Carr has lost a long battle with myeloma Cancer

Jim Carr, former Cabinet Minister, loses battle with myeloma Cancer after a long and courageous fight. Carr, the former journalist and musician, had represented Winnipeg South Centre since 2015 and was re-elected in 2019. 

“As a dedicated elected official, business and community leader in Manitoba for over 30 years, Jim was loved and respected by so many and we know he will be profoundly missed,” Statement issued by Carr’s family

“Our team has lost a valued member, our country has lost a dedicated Parliamentarian, and so many of us have lost a close friend. Jim Carr’s passion, tenacity, integrity, humour, and commitment to the Prairies were second to none – and we’ll miss him dearly.” Said Prime Minister Trudeau

Carr wanted to ensure Canadians had a future where the environment would be protected and sponsored private members Bill C-235, 

Building a Green Prairie Economy Act. The third reading and adoption of Bill C-235, An Act respecting the Building of a Green Economy in the Prairies, took place on December 7, 2022.

As a mark of respect for Carr, his colleague observed a moment of silence today in the House of Commons. Speaker Anthony Rota adjourned the House of Commons for the remainder of the day after Carr’s death was announced Monday. The motion was adopted by unanimous consent.
