When music, energy, and community converge, the result is nothing short of transformative. On September 19, 2026, Sgt. Tommy Prince Place in Winnipeg became the epicenter of an extraordinary celebration of movement and health. Hundreds of participants from all walks of life gathered to take part in the Reggaeton 2026 Zumba Masterclass featuring international presenter duo The Twinz, Daniel and Nicolas. Spearheaded and led by Winnipeg’s own Zumba leader, Rhiz Aco (Rhiz Akko), alongside her dedicated colleagues, including Maro DeGuzman, Leah Pintor Andres, Marissa Pili and the extended Groove Xpress Winnipeg team, the event highlighted the enduring power of community-driven fitness.
For years, Rhiz Aco and her fellow instructors have been familiar, encouraging figures across the city. Week after week, in community centers, studios, and outdoor spaces, these leaders have consistently championed active lifestyles. Their ongoing efforts go far beyond teaching choreography; they foster inclusive spaces where individuals feel empowered to prioritize their physical and mental well-being. The impressive turnout for international guest instructors Daniel and Nicolas stands as a testament to the strong, connected foundation built by local advocates over time.
Bringing internationally recognized Zumba presenters like The Twinz to Winnipeg requires vision, coordination, and community trust. Daniel and Nicolas brought infectious energy and high-tempo reggaeton rhythms that kept the floor moving continuously. Yet, the true magic of the event lay in the collective energy of the crowd. Attendees filled the venue, proving that fitness transcends routine exercise, it is a shared experience built on joy, resilience, and personal commitment.

The event also caught my attention because of the important connection between sports, recreation and the overall well-being of our city. I spoke about the vital role active living can play in community safety and public health, and why I believe we need to make these programs more accessible to people of all ages.
“More sports mean less crime,” I said. “When elected Mayor, Zumba and other grassroots wellness programs will be a huge part of keeping Winnipeg fit, vibrant and active, from our local recreation centres to our senior homes. To show our city’s commitment to community health, I promise to hold Winnipeg’s first-ever Zumba fitness masterclass right in the City Hall courtyard. In addition, hold Zumba dance class oncea week in the courtyard. Give as many employees the hour off, as staffing allows, to get some excercise with full pay. Be well in Winnipeg!
In an era where sedentary habits and daily stressors can easily dominate routines, events of this scale serve as a vital reminder of the importance of active health. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of chronic conditions, enhances cardiovascular health, and boosts psychological resilience. However, knowing the physical benefits of exercise is only part of the equation; sustained participation requires motivation, accessibility, and community support. By pairing high-energy music with approachable group fitness formats, Rhiz Aco and the Groove Xpress community have successfully removed barriers to participation, making healthy living engaging and achievable.

The atmosphere at Sgt. Tommy Prince Place reflected a deep sense of shared purpose. From seasoned fitness enthusiasts to newcomers trying Zumba for the first time, participants shared an environment free of judgment. That sense of belonging is essential for long-term health outcomes. When individuals feel supported by instructors and peers, fitness ceases to be a chore and becomes a meaningful part of daily life.
Sustaining a healthy city relies on the steady dedication of grassroots leaders. Instructors like Rhiz Aco, Maro DeGuzman, Leah Pintor Andres, Marissa Pili, and their collaborators at Groove Xpress continue to give their time and energy to keep Winnipeg active. Their passion creates ripple effects that extend far beyond a single masterclass. Every class taught and every event organized contributes to a healthier, more connected populace.
As the final rhythms of Daniel and Nicolas’s set echoed through the hall, the mood remained high. Participants left the venue energized, hydrated, and connected. Events like these demonstrate that true wellness is about movement, celebration, and coming together with a shared commitment to living well. Through leadership, passion, and sustained effort, Winnipeg’s Zumba community continues to demonstrate how physical health and vibrant community spirit go hand in hand.
