Founding Member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Rossington, Dies at 71

Founding member of the legendary music group Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington has passed away. The sad news was made public Sunday evening through a statement from his family, which reads, “Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time.”

Gary Rossington was a true rock icon known for his incredible guitar skills and his contributions to the Southern rock genre. He was a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd and was one of the band’s key songwriters. Together with Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins, he wrote some of the most iconic songs in rock history, including “Free Bird,” “Simple Man,” and, of course, “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Rossington survived a tragic plane crash in 1977 that took the lives of several band members, including Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines, including the pilot, co-pilot and assistant road manager. Despite suffering from serious injuries, Rossington made a full recovery and returned to the stage with Lynyrd Skynyrd just a year later.

Over the years, Rossington continued to be a driving force behind Lynyrd Skynyrd’s success. He remained with the band through numerous lineup changes and continued to tour and record music well into his seventies. His contributions to Southern rock and to the world of music as a whole will never be forgotten.
