Energizing Employment: $1 Billion Boost for Battery Manufacturing in BC

Reinforcing Canada’s position in the global battery manufacturing landscape, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier David Eby, and Mayor Dan Ruimy announced substantial support for a new lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing facility in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. E-One Moli, a leading battery company, is set to invest $1 billion in constructing this facility, committed to creating up to 350 new jobs and securing over 100 existing positions.

The $1 billion facility, fueled by British Columbia’s clean energy, aims to become the largest factory in Canada for high-performance lithium-ion battery cells, producing up to 135 million cells annually. This initiative is anticipated to boost the local economy, with E-One Moli’s investment creating jobs that range from manufacturing to support roles. The move is a testament to Canada’s attractiveness in drawing global projects along the battery supply chain, contributing to job creation and economic growth.

The federal government is allocating up to $204.5 million to support this venture through the Strategic Innovation Fund’s Net Zero Accelerator Initiative. In parallel, the Government of British Columbia is contributing $80 million towards the facility’s construction. This collaboration underscores the commitment to sustainable economic development, emphasizing the significance of clean technology projects in securing jobs and advancing Canada’s position as a global leader.

Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized the role of British Columbians in the clean technology space, linking the project to job creation and climate change efforts. Premier Eby highlighted the facility’s contribution to building a clean energy future and establishing British Columbia as a hub for innovation. Mayor Ruimy expressed gratitude for government funding and support, recognizing the economic milestone for Maple Ridge.

The lithium-ion battery cells produced in Maple Ridge will play a pivotal role in electrifying various applications, including consumer electronics, power tools, medical devices, high-performance vehicles, and aerospace applications. This aligns with global efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources, reducing reliance on traditional diesel-powered devices.

E-One Moli’s manufacturing facility is expected to begin construction in June 2024, with full operational capacity projected for 2028. The investment in clean technology and critical minerals reflects Canada’s commitment to the low-carbon economy, with Budget 2023 allocating funds to the Strategic Innovation Fund to develop clean technologies.
