The calcium hypochlorite market is estimated to be valued at US$ 71.29 Bn in 2024 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 10.5% over the forecast period 2024-2031, as highlighted in a new report published by Coherent Market Insights.

Calcium hypochlorite finds widespread application as a disinfectant and bleaching agent in water treatment. It is primarily used for purifying drinking water and wastewater. Growing concerns regarding water borne diseases and stringent regulations pertaining to water quality standards are expected to drive the demand for calcium hypochlorite over the forecast period. Furthermore, increasing industrialization and urbanization in developing regions has augmented the need for sustainable and efficient water treatment processes. This in turn is propelling the calcium hypochlorite market growth.

Key Market Trends:

One of the key trends gaining traction in the market is the use of calcium hypochlorite for industrial water treatment. Several industries such as food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, and pulp & paper have started utilizing calcium hypochlorite to disinfect process water and cooling tower water. This helps control microbial growth and prevents contamination. Another emerging trend is the increasing adoption of calcium hypochlorite based disinfectants and sanitizers for household and institutional cleaning. The ability of calcium hypochlorite to kill germs and purify surfaces is accelerating its demand from the cleaning products industry. More coverage can be found in the sample copy.

Market Opportunities

The calcium hypochlorite market by manufacturing process insights is estimated to witness a CAGR of ~10% during the forecast period. Calcium hypochlorite is majorly produced through the chlorination process. In the chlorination process, slaked lime or hydrated lime is treated with chlorine gas to produce calcium hypochlorite. The chlorination process accounts for over 70% of the total calcium hypochlorite production globally.

The powder segment held the largest share of over 60% in the global calcium hypochlorite market in 2020. Powdered calcium hypochlorite is the most common and widely used form in disinfection applications such as swimming pools and wastewater treatment. The powders have high stability and are easy to handle and dose accurately for disinfection. However, the paste and granular segments are expected to witness significant growth during the forecast period.

Recent Developments in Calcium Hypochlorite Market

In June, Calcifert – a leading Brazilian producer – started up a new 15,000 MT calcium hypochlorite plant in Sao Paolo state. The new plant doubles Calcifert’s total Brazilian manufacturing capacity and positions the company to better serve the country’s large agriculture industry as well as industrial and municipal customers. Calcifert expects the plant to be fully ramped up within six months of starting production. Company executives noted the new capacity will help secure Calcifert’s role as the top supplier of chlorine products in Brazil and allow exports to other markets in South America.

In July, chemical giant Ineos announced a major expansion at its calcium hypochlorite plant in Runcorn, UK. The over £30 million project will boost the plant’s capacity by 10,000 MT per year to a new total of over 50,000 MT. Ineos cited strong demand from the water treatment and industrial bleaching sectors in both the UK and Europe as driving the need for more supply. The upgraded facilities are expected to be operational early in 2024. The expansion will help Ineos strengthen its position as one of the largest calcium hypochlorite producers in Europe and capitalize on the growth potential seen across key end-use sectors on the continent.
