This final will be a defining moment

When the first leg of the inaugural UEFA Women’s Europa Cup final takes place on 25 April and the return leg on 1 May 2026, Hammarby and Häcken will not see each other as complete strangers. This is because the two finalists are Swedish clubs and old rivals. Their qualifications for the final reflect a Scandinavian dominance in this season’s UEFA Women’s Europa Cup tournament while placing Swedish football on the cusp of a remarkable achievement.

Hammarby and Häcken are domestic giants, and for these two contenders, history beckons. However, that is not all they are vying for. A chance at automatic qualification for the third qualifying round in next season’s Champions League is also up for grabs. For either Hammarby or Häcken, a place in the third round means one step away from gaining entry into the league phase for the 2026/27 season.

Certainly, both clubs know that a prestigious place in the final was not achieved without strains. They had to roll up their sleeves and put their shoulders to the wheel across six rounds of the competition that involved 43 formidable teams. Without a doubt, their spots in the final were earned through a combination of will and hard work, a point that has been publicly underlined.

Speaking in a virtual media conference prior to the second leg of the semi-finals, Sparta Prague’s Franny Černá said part of the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup journey was both “exciting and nerve-wracking,” while Hammarby’s Norwegian midfielder Elin Sørum said it was “always hard to win away.”

On 2 April, Hammarby routed Czech Republic’s Sparta Prague 5–2 on aggregate after winning 3–2 in the first leg and 2–0 at home in the second leg. For its part, Häcken beat Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt 3–0 away from home before losing 0–1 in the return leg to book a place in the final.

For coach Elena Sadiku of Häcken and William Strömberg of Hammarby, this final will represent far more than a defining moment in their respective careers. For both managers, their final encounter will be framed as a chance for landmark honors too. The historical nature of what is at stake will further heighten expectations for the competing clubs, their players, and passionate fans. The UEFA Women’s Europa Cup Final will also serve as a prelude to another big game because Hammarby and Häcken will confront each other again on 16 May 2026 in the final of the Swedish Cup.

The first leg of the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup Final will be hosted by Hammarby at 15:00 CET on Saturday 25 April, while Häcken will host the second leg at 16:00 CET on Friday 1 May.

Regardless of who eventually triumphs, Sweden’s football culture will also find its place in history prominently carved in gold when the story of the first UEFA Women’s Europa Cup Final is finally written.
