Unesco Wonders and Stilt Dancers Light Up the Belgian Pavilion at Folklorama

WINNIPEG — With twenty-one UNESCO World Heritage sites anchoring its rich cultural identity, the Belgian Pavilion at Folklorama transformed its venue into a vibrant epicenter of European folklore, featuring towering stilt dancers, authentic folk traditions, and an impressive celebration of the country’s legendary brewing heritage.

Operating within a cozy and intimate venue that brought spectators right into the heart of the action, the pavilion successfully highlighted the pageantry of Belgium’s most famous festivals. Performers commandingly maneuvered on stilts while showcasing traditional regional dances, including the quick-footed routines traditionally performed by sailors around the historic shrimp festivals. Against a backdrop of lively polka and clogging music recorded and played with precision, dancers executed intricate steps in authentic cultural attires that captured the old-world spirit of Flanders and beyond.

No celebration of Belgian culture would be complete without a nod to its agricultural roots and world-famous libations. The pavilion prominently showcased more than 1,500 distinct varieties of Belgian beer, paired expertly with savory beer cheese. Belgium’s brewing culture, celebrated globally and recognized by UNESCO, traces its deep roots back to medieval monastery traditions and custom-crafted specialty glassware. Energy in the room peaked when performer Lorraine took the stage to lead the crowd in the traditional Beer Song, prompting an overwhelming wave of audience participation. Spectators locked arms, rocking in unison side to side and back and forth inside the packed room.

In a surprising nod to old-world folklore that left the audience astounded, a lucky volunteer stepped up to participate in a rare live-fish beer drinking tradition, marking a memorable first for the venue. The lighter side of rural tradition was further embraced through a comedic on-stage performance simulating the milking of a cow, which drew roaring laughter from the crowd.

Pavilion Coordinator Suzanne Armstrong reflected on the deep sense of community that defines the event year after year. Describing the atmosphere, she noted that the pavilion operates less like a standard exhibition space and more like an extension of a family home, cultivating a warm and welcoming environment where every guest feels like an old friend.

That sense of warmth and shared heritage ultimately proved to be the true highlight of the entire engagement. From the intricate footwork and soaring accordion tunes to the final cheers of a community united by song, the pavilion demonstrated that the true magic of Belgium lies not just in its centuries-old history or world-class breweries, but in the enduring spirit of hospitality that brings people together under one cozy roof.
