A Taste of Tradition: Inside the Vibrant Ukraine-Kyiv Pavilion at Folklorama

The vibrant spirit of culture, resilience, and community comes alive once again as the Ukraine-Kyiv Pavilion welcomes visitors to Folklorama, the world’s largest and longest-running multicultural festival. Presented by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Manitoba Provincial Council, this year’s pavilion centers around a celebration of food with the theme “The True Cooking of Ukraine – Celebrating the Authentic Ukrainian Kitchen”. Beyond simply a meal, Ukrainian cuisine tells a profound story of family, resilience, tradition, and hospitality. Featuring cherished family favourites and rediscovered regional recipes, the pavilion honors the rich culinary heritage that brings generations together and continues to define Ukrainian culture today, asking the timeless question of where else one could possibly find more authentic pierogies.

Stepping into the venue transports guests to the lively atmosphere of a traditional Ukrainian Yarmarok, or fair, recreating bustling village marketplaces where families once traveled from near and far for commerce, celebration, and fellowship. Long before sunrise, villagers would journey by foot and horse-drawn wagon carrying the fruits of their labour to market, where buying and selling were matched by a vibrant backdrop of music, dance, delicious food, and warm hospitality. Pavilion coordinator Yury Kruk, a long-time staple of Folklorama who has coordinated multiple pavilions, helps guests understand the deep cultural importance of bread, noting that Ukraine is recognized as one of the breadbaskets of the world. This agricultural and cultural significance is reflected throughout the handmade cultural displays, which feature a traditional avenue reminiscent of a Ukrainian home. This display serves as a focal point, complete with an oven that provided heat and double-served as a cozy place where a mattress could be placed to keep a child warm.

The entertainment pipeline is nothing short of extraordinary, featuring world-class dancing defined by phenomenal spinning, jumping, turning, and twirling, alongside a magnificent choir and youth who are truly paving the way with dance. In an impressive display of artistic dedication, the Ukraine-Kyiv Pavilion stands out as one of the only pavilions in Folklorama where every single show across all seven days is entirely brand new, speaking volumes about the massive talent pool and wide variety of performers.

Beyond the performances and culinary delights, the pavilion holds profound significance as a vital space for newcomers to showcase their artisans and craftsmanship, connect with the business community, and find a platform to excel. Adding to its unique local charm, it remains one of the only pavilions where every drop of beer and alcohol served is entirely locally sourced. Operating as a non-profit community organization, proceeds from the pavilion help support the cultural, educational, and humanitarian initiatives of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Manitoba Provincial Council, strengthening the local Ukrainian community while preserving traditions for future generations. Having been a cherished Folklorama tradition for all 55 years of the festival’s existence, the pavilion relies on the dedication of hundreds of volunteers to ensure every visitor leaves with wonderful memories, new friendships, and a true taste of Ukraine.

With a portion of the proceeds going directly to support the Dauphin Ukrainian community, the pavilion extends its impact far beyond the festival grounds. This enduring commitment ensures that the cultural roots shared in Winnipeg continue to nurture and strengthen community ties across the province. As visitors gather to share a meal, admire the handcrafted goods, and experience the warmth of Ukrainian hospitality, they become part of a legacy that has thrived for over half a century.
