They Stole His Farm, Brutalized Him, and Called It “Law”: The Derrick Williamson Story

Emma Ansah sits down with Derrick Williamson, a Black farmer, wildlife sanctuary owner, and a living reminder of how far injustice will go when Black folks dare to own land and refuse to be pushed off it. What happened to Derrick wasn’t a misunderstanding or bad paperwork, it was a straight-up land grab. A white couple took his farm, and when Derrick stood his ground, police didn’t protect him, they attacked him. He was violently forced off property he legally owned, his animals were taken, and the life he built was dismantled in real time.

This has been a five-year battle. Five years of court dates, delays, legal stonewalling, and a county still fighting him over getting his own home back. And here’s the part that sounds unreal but isn’t: the same couple who took Derrick’s farm and house later died in a tragic plane crash. Yet the injustice didn’t end there. Their children and other family members are still living in Derrick’s home, while he remains locked out of what is rightfully his.

To survive, Derrick has been forced to work 60 hours a week in a warehouse, just to make ends meet and keep a roof over his head, while his land, sanctuary, and legacy remain out of reach. In this conversation, he walks us through the corruption, the violence, the stolen animals, the emotional toll, and why he’s still fighting like hell to reclaim what’s his.
