The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are about to get a firsthand look at one of the most explosive football talents Winnipeg has produced in years, except this time he will be wearing the colours of their arch rivals. The Saskatchewan Roughriders did not just sign another defensive back this week. They landed an elite athlete, a future CFL all-star and one of the most cerebral, explosive and dangerous defensive prospects to come out of Manitoba in years.
For football fans in Winnipeg, Trae Tomlinson’s rise has been impossible to ignore. From the moment he stepped onto the field in peewee football with the St. Vital Mustangs, there was already a different energy surrounding him. He was faster than everyone, more prepared than everyone else and carried himself with the confidence of an athlete who fully expected to dominate every level he touched. Years later, nothing has changed.
Tomlinson built his reputation at St. Paul’s High School, where he developed into one of Manitoba’s premier football players and one of the province’s elite all-around athletes. Coaches quickly realized he was not simply relying on natural ability. He studied the game relentlessly, mastered the details and approached every practice and every snap with intensity. Long before university scouts came calling, Tomlinson already looked like a player destined for the professional ranks.
What separated him from many elite athletes was the complete package. He combined blazing speed with football intelligence, discipline and toughness. A former 100-metre champion, Tomlinson possessed elite acceleration and closing speed that instantly overwhelmed opposing receivers, but he also played the game with the instincts and awareness of a veteran defensive back. Quarterbacks who underestimated him learned quickly that mistakes disappeared in a hurry once the football was in the air.
Throughout his football career, all Tomlinson has done is win, produce and elevate the level of every team he has joined. That trend continued at the University of Richmond before carrying over to University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he further established himself as one of the most versatile and dangerous defensive backs on the field. Whether lining up in coverage, stepping into run support or delivering momentum-changing hits, he consistently impacted games with elite-level athleticism and preparation.
His testing numbers only reinforced what scouts already believed. Tomlinson posted a blazing 4.47-second 40-yard dash while also recording a 36-inch vertical jump and a broad jump exceeding 10 feet. Those are elite numbers, but they only tell part of the story. His explosiveness, reaction time and instincts make him play even faster than the stopwatch suggests.
Off the field, Tomlinson also developed a reputation as a weight room monster whose work ethic matched his natural gifts. Coaches and teammates consistently praised his discipline and commitment to improvement. He attacked training with the same intensity he brought to the football field, turning himself into the kind of complete athlete capable of thriving at the professional level.
Brad Black of Recruit Ready, one of North America’s premier football academies, praised Tomlinson following the signing announcement, calling him one of the best all-around football players the academy has produced. Black highlighted his elite speed, intelligence, hard-hitting style and ability to dominate virtually anywhere in the secondary, traits that have followed Tomlinson throughout his football journey.
For Saskatchewan, this signing has all the makings of a massive steal. The Riders are not getting a developmental project or a player trying to figure out his game. They are getting a polished, elite athlete with shutdown ability, elite instincts and the mentality of a champion. They are getting a future CFL all-star capable of becoming one of the league’s premier defensive backs.
For Winnipeg, however, the storyline cuts even deeper.
A hometown football star who dominated local fields is now heading directly into the heart of the CFL’s fiercest rivalry wearing Rider green. The Bombers are not preparing for an average defensive back lining up across from them. They are preparing for years of elite shutdown defence from one of Winnipeg’s own, a player capable of changing games with speed, physicality and intelligence every single snap.
Winnipeg football fans watched Trae Tomlinson grow from a dominant local phenom into one of the country’s elite defensive prospects. Now, the hometown speedster is heading straight into the heart of the Prairie rivalry armed with elite shutdown defence, world-class speed and the mentality of a champion.
The rest of the CFL is getting introduced to Trae Tomlinson.
The Bombers are about to get terrorized by him.
