Recent escalations in the Middle East have sparked concerns among leading humanitarian organizations, warning of the potential for widespread civilian harm and regional conflagration. In a joint statement, 13 prominent NGOs operating in the region emphasized the urgent need for political and diplomatic solutions to mitigate the crisis.

The consortium, comprising organizations such as the International Rescue Committee (IRC), Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), and Save the Children, stressed that all available means must be utilized to prevent further escalation and protect civilian lives. The statement comes amid escalating tensions that pose a significant risk to millions of people already grappling with crises ranging from conflict to displacement and climate change.

“A regional conflict would be catastrophic for the Middle East, exacerbating existing humanitarian crises and causing untold suffering to millions,” the NGOs emphasized. They called on all parties involved, as well as those with influence, to prioritize de-escalation efforts and uphold international law without compromise.

Citing their extensive experience in the region, the signatories underscored the potential global ramifications of a regional conflict. They warned of heightened forced displacement, disruptions to global supply chains, and impacts on energy supplies, emphasizing the interconnectedness of crises in the Middle East with broader global stability.

The NGOs highlighted the ongoing conflict in Gaza as a central concern, noting continued violations of international humanitarian law. They reiterated their collective call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza to alleviate human suffering and reduce tensions in the region.

The joint statement concluded with the signatures of the 13 organizations, including the Danish Refugee Council, ActionAid, and Relief International, reaffirming their commitment to advocating for peace and stability in the Middle East through concerted political and diplomatic efforts.
