Liz Truss Named New Britain’s New Prime Minister

Truss becomes the second woman to ever hold the role of Prime Minister of Britain

Today, members of the Conservative party voted for Liz Truss to lead Britain as its next prime minister. Currently serving as the nation’s minister of foreign affairs, Truss beat out her rival minister of finance, Rishi Sunak, by a vote of 81,326 to 60,399 to win the leadership race, thus making her the prime minister.

Out of 180,000 eligible voting members, approximately 48% exercised their options to participate in the process. Low voter turnouts are signs of disinterest and lack of support for either candidate. Since Boris Johnson resigned early in the year, the Brits have seen the economy on the brink of a recession.

Gas and energy prices have skyrocketed, inflation is making it impossible for homeownership and trust in government are at an all-time low. Many of these issues can be traced back to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, and the country still has not fully recovered from the global pandemic.

In her acceptance speech, Truss promises to cut taxes and put in place a solid within weeks of her inauguration to tackle the high energy cost. :

“I am honoured to be elected Leader of the Conservative Party. Thank you for putting your trust in me to lead and deliver for our great country. I will take bold action to get all of us through these tough times, grow our economy, and unleash the United Kingdom’s potential.” Said Prime Minister Liz Truss,

Truss’ renewed optimism comes with skepticism from opposition parties and economists. Truss’ willingness to promise tax cuts without indicating where her government plans to make up the deficit is not seen as responsible government.

As congratulatory calls from world leaders continue to pour in for Truss, the gravity and magnitude of her task ahead will face its challenges. The next United Kingdom general election is scheduled to be held no later than Tuesday, 28 January 2025, giving Truss and her party ample time to prove to the nation why she deserves another mandate to govern.
