Inquest Date Into The Death of Matthew Mahoney Announced

Mahoney was fatally shot by Windsor, Ont., police in 2018

Dr. Elizabeth Urbantke, Regional Supervising Coroner for West Region, London Office, has announced the date for the inquest into the death of Matthew Mahoney.

Mr. Mahoney, 33, died in hospital on March 21, 2018, from injuries following an interaction with Windsor police officers. An inquest into Mr. Mahoney’s death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The purpose of the inquest is to examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Mahoney’s death. Once all parties with standing have the opportunity to present their information and ask questions of the witnesses, the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths from occurring in similar circumstances.

The inquest is expected to last 10 days and hear from 18 witnesses.

The inquest will start at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2022. Daniel Ambrosini will be the presiding officer and Brian White will be inquest counsel.
