Citizens of War Lake First Nation Plan Rail Blockade

Non Indigenous citizens are allowed to board trains without wearing a mask

Citizens from the War Lake First Nation are planning to block the rail line running through their territory due to their lack of ability to purchase tickets on trains as well as mixed messaging about COVID-19 health measures.

“War Lake citizens have been instructed to wear masks while travelling on Via Rail due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” stated Chief Betsy Kennedy of War Lake First Nation. “These same residents have witnessed non-Indigenous tourists being allowed to travel on Via Rail without wearing a mask. This is a two-tier system and it’s unacceptable.”

“Our second concern is that Via Rail selling all tickets to tourists heading to Churchill. Due to the uptick in tourism, as a result of COVID travel restrictions, War Lake residents are not able to access tickets for the train to Ilford. War Lake citizens depend upon the train for essential travel,” shared Chief Kennedy. “We are taking action today to make it known that Via Rail absolutely needs to set aside some tickets for residents living in Northern communities.”

“MKO sent a letter to Via Rail earlier this week asking them to rectify this situation immediately,” said Grand Chief Garrison Settee. “The citizens of War Lake First Nation rely on rail service to travel and to transport goods. I have asked the CEO and President of Via Rail to investigate the concerns of War Lake citizens immediately in an effort to avoid direct action being taken by War Lake citizens. There are plans to block the tracks heading to Northern Manitoba if they do not receive a satisfactory response from Via Rail.”

Among the distinguished speakers were Stephanie Leonard, Environmental Coordinator from Caribou Patrol, Elder Heather Poitras from the Northern Forestry Centre, Jason Krips, President and CEO of the Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA), and Todd Loewen, Alberta's Minister of Forestry and Parks. Throughout the summit, participants delved into a variety of hands-on workshops, including monitoring migratory birds, podcasting on science topics, and understanding forest hydrology. Additionally, they embarked on experiential field trips around Canmore, where they learned about bear safety, forest management, and Indigenous perspectives on nature. Brett Weighill, lead teacher for Piikani Nation Secondary School's Regenerate team, emphasized the profound impact of the summit on students, stating, "For many of our students, this is a rare opportunity to travel and see places like Canmore. It is the first opportunity to participate in a formal conference setting. We engage with topics in a real-life setting and make connections back to the text." The summit concluded with each school team tasked with creating an education action project to share their newfound knowledge with their peers and communities. Kathryn Wagner, Inside Education's Program Director, highlighted the positive outcomes of the summit, noting that students left feeling informed, inspired, and empowered to contribute towards a more sustainable future. Weighill further expressed the significance of events like Regenerate, stating, "This is one of the best conferences that teachers have access to. You will meet other teachers and schools that are undertaking interesting projects similar to your own. You can network, codesign, and maybe even explore educational careers for yourself beyond the classroom!" Inside Education, as the driving force behind this summit, remains committed to inspiring K-12 students and teachers through various educational initiatives, including learning resources, interactive presentations, field trips, and professional development opportunities.
