CBSA and RCMP Seize $2 Million Worth of Cocaine at Coutts Border Crossing

In a major victory for border security, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), alongside the Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET) in Alberta, has successfully intercepted a massive shipment of cocaine at the Coutts port of entry. On November 13, 2024, CBSA officers conducted a secondary inspection of a commercial truck attempting to cross the border, uncovering 189 kilograms of cocaine. The seizure, valued at an estimated $2 million wholesale, marks a significant blow to criminal networks seeking to distribute illegal narcotics in Canada.

This operation underscores the collaborative efforts of the IBET, a joint force initiative combining the expertise of the CBSA, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and the Calgary Police Service. Tasked with maintaining border integrity and intercepting illicit activities, IBET’s efforts demonstrate the critical importance of cross-agency cooperation in safeguarding Canadian communities.

Superintendent Sean Boser of the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region emphasized the significance of the seizure, stating that it reflects the RCMP’s commitment to preventing harmful substances from entering the country. “With the support of various law enforcement agencies, we’ve successfully prevented harmful drugs from entering Canada and harming our communities,” Boser noted.

Ben Tame, Director for the Southern Alberta and Southern Saskatchewan District of the CBSA, praised the agency’s officers for their diligence in identifying and intercepting illegal narcotics. He highlighted the importance of such operations in disrupting organized crime networks, stating, “This significant seizure serves as another example of how Canada’s borders are being secured and drugs are kept off our streets.”

Echoing these sentiments, Superintendent Jeff Bell of the Calgary Police Service’s Criminal Operations & Intelligence Division pointed to the broader implications of the bust. “Our efforts to combat drug trafficking rely heavily on working closely with our partner law enforcement agencies,” Bell said. “This is a significant seizure that undoubtedly had the potential to cause serious damage to our community.”
