Today, Canada is boosting the long-term strength and capabilities of its CH-146 Griffon helicopters, a crucial part of the Canadian Armed Forces, announcing a $2.28-billion contract awarded to Bell Textron Canada Limited (BTCL).

The contract, shared by Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, confirms BTCL’s role in providing full support for the active CH-146 Griffon fleet. These helicopters play vital roles in various missions, such as transport, emergency response, and search and rescue. Starting in April 2024, the support contract is set to last until at least the mid-2030s.

“This support contract with Bell Textron Canada Limited will help keep the Canadian Armed Forces’ CH-146 Griffon helicopters going and also create and maintain jobs in Canada.” – Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Public Services and Procurement.

“As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force, today’s investment shows our commitment to keeping Canada safe. The CH-146 Griffon provides crucial capabilities to the Royal Canadian Air Force, and this support contract will be key for the next 15 years.” – Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence

Under the agreement, BTCL will provide various services, including program management, engineering, technical services, component repair and overhaul, and procuring spares and heavy maintenance services. These activities will occur in Canada, creating or preserving 1,130 jobs nationwide.

Aligned with the Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy, BTCL commits to business activities equal to the contract value and creates opportunities for a broader range of Canadian businesses, especially smaller and medium-sized enterprises. As a result, BTCL’s contributions can potentially inject at least $125 million into Canada’s gross domestic product each year throughout the duration of the contract. Currently, 82 CH-146 Griffon helicopters are actively positioned in 11 locations across Canada, and the recent contract with Bell Textron Canada Limited (BTCL) was initiated following a Request for Proposal from Public Services and Procurement Canada on January 16, 2023.
