In an exclusive interview, Emma Ansah sits down with Roid Thompson, a concerned father and advocate, who is calling for a boycott of The Flying Squirrel in Whitby, Ontario. The controversy surrounding the popular entertainment venue erupted after management falsely claimed that a group of Black teens, including Thompson’s daughters, were behaving unruly, leading to a dramatic and disturbing turn of events.
On the night of Family Day, Thompson’s daughters and their friends had gathered at The Flying Squirrel for a private event.
However, what was supposed to be a fun and memorable night quickly turned into a nightmare. Management, citing unfounded claims of unruly behavior, called the police, and multiple officers arrived at the scene. The event was subsequently shut down, leaving the teens and their families feeling humiliated, frustrated, and traumatized.
When asked if he believed the incident was a case of racial profiling, Thompson’s response is unequivocal. “Absolutely. I have no doubt that if those kids were white, the outcome would have been very different. The fact that management felt comfortable calling the police on a group of Black teens, without any evidence or justification, speaks volumes about the systemic racism and biases that exist in our society.”
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability. Thompson, determined to ensure that no other family has to endure a similar experience, is leading the charge. “We need to hold The Flying Squirrel accountable for their actions. We need to send a message that racial profiling and discrimination will not be tolerated in our community.”
