Journey to the Azores: Why the Pavilion of Portugal is Folklorama Royalty

Step through the doors of the Pavilion of Portugal, and you are immediately enveloped in the warmth of true hospitality, feeling less like a festival site and more like a family reunion where everyone knows your name. Led by Pavilion Coordinator Meagan Botelho and Junior Pavilion Coordinator Emily Cortez, this long-standing Folklorama institution has been around for decades, which is perhaps why the atmosphere is so wonderfully warm and friendly. From the moment you walk in the door, you see familiar, smiling faces like Grace greeting you with a warm, welcoming greeting. The amazing knowledge and hospitality shown by the coordinators, who are long staples having grown up right inside the pavilion, create an environment steeped in heritage and love.

This year’s theme focuses entirely on the breathtaking Azores, exploring the nine distinct islands, each of which has its own unique flavor and specialty. From pineapple growing and rich agricultural traditions to stunning volcanoes and black sandy beaches overlooking pristine waters of tranquility, the immersion is complete. You can easily picture the locals using the heat of the volcano to cook right in the sand, or think of the regions known for grapes growing on the rocks instead of traditional vines, alongside areas rich in bullfighters and cascading waterfalls.

When it comes to the cultural display, this year’s exhibit is an absolute masterpiece of craftsmanship and design that completely redefines what an immersive cultural experience can be. We thought last year’s display was impressive, earning a solid ten out of ten, but this year’s installation easily shatters that benchmark, deserving a twenty out of ten. Months of meticulous preparation culminated in a breathtaking presentation featuring an unbelievable mini-replica of the nine islands, complete with a real mechanical bull, volcanoes that would make any science fair judge drool with awe, and an actual working waterfall that brings the rugged Azorean landscape to vibrant life.

Above all else, what you hear constantly repeated by the coordinators and directors is just how invaluable the volunteers are, whose tireless dedication forms the true heartbeat of the entire operation. Director of Culture Sandra Clemente poured so much plaster into building some of the exhibits that she practically earned enough hands-on experience to take up a second job in the construction industry! Sandra could not stop emphasizing the unbelievable and immense amount of work and love that every single volunteer poured into bringing this vision to life.

Once Meagan and Emily finished guiding us through the exhibit, offering a tour so rich and detailed that you walk away knowing everything about Portugal, it almost makes you want to hop on a plane right this minute. Part of that brilliant interactive experience included your very own Portugal passport; as you island-hopped from display to display across the exhibit, you could actually stamp your passport at every single stop. Every corner of the display reveals a new layer of storytelling, capturing the maritime heritage and the sheer geological wonder of the archipelago with stunning accuracy. Visitors linger for ages just taking in the meticulous details, marveling at how a community-driven volunteer effort can produce something that rivals professional museum installations. It is a visual and educational feast that sets the absolute gold standard for what cultural education and presentation can achieve within the festival circuit.

Then there is the food—oh my, oh my, the culinary delights are just out of this world, pairing perfectly with the festivities and leaving every guest completely satiated and smiling. Keeping the energy high and the spirits bright, we have to give a very special shout-out to the incredible bartenders and to Robert Cortez for keeping the good Portuguese ale flowing all night long. When you spend decades volunteering here, it is clear that giving back has become second nature to them, and their tireless hospitality anchors the entire social hub of the venue.

The rhythm of the evening matches the warmth of the hospitality, creating a seamless flow from the dining tables to the main stage where cultural pride truly takes center stage. You can feel the collective heartbeat of the room quicken as the lights dim and the performers prepare to share their heritage through motion and song. It is this shared anticipation that transforms a simple cultural showcase into an electric, communal celebration of identity, bringing generations together under one roof to revel in the shared beauty of Portuguese tradition.

The entertainment is equally stellar, starting with the dancing from the juniors who performed an unbelievable three dances to perfection at every single show. Let me emphasize that again: not only did the kids dance through three separate shows, but at each and every show there were three intricate dances performed to the absolute delight of the audience. Watching them, it is clear that the future is secure and in good hands. The cultural attires are vibrant and stunning, a glowing testament to the countless hours that go into teaching the kids and practicing week after week.

Adding to the magic, a sensational singer from the Azores who performed on The Voice Portugal returned as a fan favorite to dazzle the crowd with her magnificent voice and dancing. The first show was fantastic, completely packed to the brim, and it certainly did not disappoint anyone lucky enough to be in attendance.
