Stepping into the Portuguese pavilion feels less like visiting a cultural showcase and more like being warmly welcomed into a sprawling, vibrant family home where hospitality is elevated to an absolute art form. At the helm of this magnificent celebration is Sabrina Petroulakis, stepping into her second year as coordinator with a fierce passion, grace, and an unwavering dedication that anchors the entire operation. This year, the pavilion brought a breathtaking thematic touch to life by featuring the art of Vienna, drawing inspiration from a charming cartoon motif that added a whimsical yet deeply sophisticated visual narrative to the space. Bringing a production of this magnitude together is no small feat, relying heavily on a dedicated army of approximately one hundred and fifty volunteers who pour their hearts into every detail.

The commitment to authenticity is woven into the very fabric of the pavilion, quite literally, through stunning hand-made cultural attires that were meticulously crafted in Portugal. Because of the staggering level of detail and traditional craftsmanship required, orders for these magnificent garments must be placed nine months to a full year in advance, ensuring that every thread reflects the true heritage of the culture. That deep sense of heritage is matched only by the familial spirit that runs through the veins of the pavilion. For Sabrina, Folklorama is profoundly personal; it is a true family affair where her daughter serves proudly as an ambassador, and both her daughter and son have actively participated in dancing across multiple cultural spaces. With a father who is Greek, Sabrina and her children have uniquely woven their lives into both the Portuguese and Greek pavilions, honouring a rich dual heritage.

That balancing act is something the family knows well, especially after last year when, for the first time in thirty years, both the Portuguese and Greek pavilions ran during the exact same week. While scheduling two major cultural presences simultaneously made things tough, the family and their dedicated team found a way to make it work through sheer grit, love, and community support. In fact, Folklorama holds an even deeper personal significance for Sabrina, as it was right here in the festival family that she first met her husband, mirroring the romantic origin stories of so many couples who found their forever loves among the pavilions. That love and warmth bleed into every single interaction, setting a standard of hospitality at its finest where every guest is treated like honored royalty.

Of course, no journey to Portugal is complete without indulging in the culinary masterpieces, highlighted by amazing, flaky, melt-in-your-mouth custard treats that leave visitors dreaming of Lisbon long after the plates are cleared. Behind the scenes and out on the floor, the magic is sustained by pillars of the community like Jennifer Da Costa Melo, a phenomenal long-time volunteer who truly does it all, effortlessly transitioning from operational powerhouse to vibrant dancer on the stage. The sense of mutual respect among the pavilions was palpable throughout the week, with all shows packed to capacity—a true sign of honour when the audience fills with ambassadors from other cultural pavilions, especially during the late show where peers come out to support one another.

That supportive energy reached its peak when the dancers took the floor to perform the intricate dances of Vienna, telling powerful stories of hope, pride, and enduring tradition. The choreography is so complex and intricate that it requires absolute precision, yet the performers move with a light, joyous grace that makes the difficult artistry look effortless. Behind the seamless guest experience are co-architects of hospitality like the other coordinator, Judy, and a past ambassador general, who together took customer service to an entirely new level, ensuring every visitor felt cared for from the moment they arrived. It is this rare combination of meticulous artistry, heartfelt dedication, and deep familial love that makes the pavilion an unforgettable cornerstone of the Folklorama experience, proving that culture is best preserved when it is shared with joy and open arms.
