What looked like a winter holiday stroll in Niagara Falls turned into something straight-out creepy when a group of white extremists hit the streets yelling “Ho, Ho, Ho, They Have to Go” while waving a banner that literally said “Remigration.” This wasn’t an ironic meme protest, these folks were openly calling for people to be sent out of the country based on who they are, not what they’ve done. Their chants echoed racialized sentiments straight from the playbook of ethno-nationalist networks seen online and in other Canadian cities, groups tied to broader white supremacist and “active club” movements that have been flagged by watchdogs for promoting xenophobia and training for race-based conflict.
Now, picture the irony, they’re chanting about deportation and “remigration” while Canada is in the middle of a very real and controversial debate on immigration policy.
