Edmonton Elects Amarjeet Sohi As The 36th Mayor

Amarjeet Sohi, former Liberal MP wins the Edmonton 2021 election

On Monday, October 18, former Liberal member of Parliament Amarjeet Sohi was elected Edmonton’s 2021 Mayor elect. Sohi replaces outgoing Don Iveson becoming the 36th Mayor of Edmonton.

Sohi is an Indo-Canadian politician who immigrated to Canada in 1981. He worked as a taxi and a city bus driver before entering a life politics. Most recently, Sohi served as a Liberal member of Parliament and acted as the Minister of Natural Recourses, and the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. Sohi also represented Ward 12 as a member of Edmonton’s City Council.

In addition to Sohi’s many accomplishments, his election makes him the first person of colour to hold the position as Mayor for the city of Edmonton. “Edmonton, I love you. And I am so proud to be your Mayor. The next chapter of our story starts tonight. Let’s get to work.” Said Sohi

During his campaign, Sohi focused on several economic and social issues. He advocated to rebuild the economy and lower the level of unemployment. Sohi plans to implement his anti-hate agenda within his first 100 days in office while working with communities to tackle the social challenges surrounding race and violence.
