Canada Considering A National 3 Digit Help Phone For Mental Health & Suicide

One in five Canadians will personally experience a mental health problem

Over the many decades being diagnosed with Mental Health was perceived to be the end of the world and was taboo to talk about. People who needed real help were ashamed to ask for it and suffered in silences. With many brave voices over the last decade like Sandra L.A Bosko and campaigns such as Bell Talk, the stigma of Mental Health and perception of people are being changed. Governments and employers are investing millions into well being of their citizens and employees especially in the time of a global pandemic.

Today, CRTC is exploring the option of putting in place a national three-digit number similar to that of the 9-8-8 helpline that is active within the United States. The establishment of a three digital national number will be in place to offer preventative services for mental health and suicide.

“With physical distancing measures in place, the pandemic’s impact on mental health is even more apparent throughout the country. Suicide-related calls, texts and chats have increased across Canada. We are asking Canadians and other interested parties for information to better understand the advantages and challenges associated with implementing a three-digit number for mental health crisis and suicide prevention services, and how any challenges can be overcome.”– Ian Scott, Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer, CRTC

There are approximately 4,000 deaths by suicide in Canada every year, which represent approximately 10 deaths every day. Some populations are at a significantly higher risk, including men, youth, those aged 45 to 59, and certain Indigenous communities.

In any given year, one in five Canadians will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. Mental illness affects people of all ages, education, income levels, and cultures. Approximately eight per cent of adults will experience major depression at some time in their lives.
