Black History Honours Marie Van Brittan Brown: The Pioneer Behind Modern Home Security Systems

In celebration of Black History Excellence, we honor the remarkable achievements of Marie Van Brittan Brown, the ingenious inventor of the first home security system. Brown’s groundbreaking innovation, patented in 1966, not only revolutionized home security but also paved the way for modern closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems.

Driven by the security concerns in her neighborhood, Brown sought to create a system that would provide her family with a sense of safety and protection. The slow response times of the police in her area prompted her to think creatively and develop a solution that would allow her to monitor and control her home’s security remotely.

Brown’s pioneering security system consisted of peepholes, a camera, monitors, a two-way microphone, and an alarm button. This innovative design enabled her to see, hear, and communicate with visitors at her door, regardless of her location within the house. The system also allowed her to unlock the door remotely for welcome visitors or alert the police instantly in case of an intruder.
