There is a distinct energy that fills the room the moment you step into the Croatia Pavilion—a warmth that wraps around you long before you even catch the scent of the grill. For longtime festival-goers who have spent decades walking through the doors of countless pavilions across the city, finding a space that genuinely lifts your spirits is a special kind of magic. This year, that magic found a new home.

Moving to a smaller, more intimate venue at the Red River Community Centre, the pavilion has undergone a transformation that is nothing short of inspired. Rather than losing momentum in a cozier space, the community found its rhythm. It is a venue change that simply called for a tighter embrace, turning a massive cultural gathering into an inviting, joyous celebration where every seat feels like the best seat in the house. As pavilion coordinator Ivan notes, reflecting on the atmosphere and the warm hospitality welcoming every guest, “This is the pavilion you go to when you want to enjoy a great meal, watch some fun dances, and feel happy.”

If you have attended your share of local choir performances over the years, you know the bar is already set high. Yet, the choral arrangements at the Croatia Pavilion manage to soar far beyond anything you have experienced before. As the voices rise together in harmony, the sheer quality of the sound is nothing short of exceptional. It is rich, resonant, and deeply moving—the kind of music that stops you mid-conversation and forces you to simply close your eyes and listen.

Behind the scenes, that community spirit is sustained by dedicated locals like Linda Marchinko, an absolute staple in the North Main community who has served on the board of the Red River Community Centre for decades. While Linda is a community volunteer, her deep Croatian heritage makes this local celebration particularly close to her heart. Alongside the devoted members of that community board, individuals like Linda have proven themselves to be true pillars of the neighborhood. “It’s just nice to see this here,” shares Marchinko, reflecting on her involvement. “It was one of those ones where it was a no-brainer: come out, volunteer, support the community.”

That same lifelong dedication is woven into the very fabric of the event. Long-standing pavilion volunteers turned out to share stories and celebrate the pavilion’s rich past, including Ana Renic Stipanovic, who proudly pinned on the exact pin she received in 1985—a treasured keepsake from the year youth ambassadors were first introduced to the festival. Wearing that piece of history served as a powerful testament to her decades of dedication to the Croatian Pavilion, acting as a living bridge between the past and the bright faces of today’s youth leading the charge.

“Our heritage is about more than just looking back at where we came from; it’s about opening our doors and letting everyone share in the joy of who we are today,” shares pavilion coordinator Ivan. “Moving to the Red River Community Centre lets us welcome our friends old and new into a space that feels like our own living room.”

Of course, no visit to the Croatia Pavilion would be complete without indulging in the culinary and visual feast. The kitchen delivers on every front, anchored by crowd-favorite Bavarian Smokies sizzling to absolute perfection alongside traditional plates that satisfy the soul. As the plates are cleared, the floor comes alive with movement. The dancing is vibrant, energetic, and wonderfully infectious. The highlight of the evening remains the famous traditional dance where performers skillfully pass a hat from head to head, moving in time with the music with effortless grace and precision.

With its blend of world-class choral performances, delicious comfort food, warm hospitality, and unmatched community spirit, the Croatia Pavilion easily stands out as one of the happiest, most uplifting stops of the season.
