WINNIPEG — Every summer, Winnipeg transforms into something few cities anywhere in the world can claim to be. For two weeks, neighbourhoods across the city become gateways to dozens of countries, cultures, languages, cuisines, traditions and performances, creating an experience that has become one of the largest and most respected multicultural festivals on the planet.
Now, as Folklorama prepares to celebrate its milestone 55th festival, organizers are expecting another strong year as hundreds of thousands of visitors prepare to explore 45 pavilions from August 2 to August 15. Ticket sales officially launched this week as volunteers, performers, cultural organizations and community leaders begin the final countdown toward what many consider Winnipeg’s most important annual cultural celebration.
“We’re thrilled to be back for another year,” said Folklorama Executive Director Teresa Cotroneo. “The dedication our members continue to show in organizing and operating their pavilions is inspiring, and it’s wonderful to have so many ethno-cultural communities participating in our milestone 55th festival.”
For generations of Winnipeggers, Folklorama has represented much more than a festival. It has become a living showcase of Manitoba’s multicultural identity and one of the clearest examples of how cultural diversity can strengthen an entire community. Every year, families, newcomers, tourists and longtime residents gather under the same roofs to experience traditions that often stretch back hundreds or even thousands of years. Visitors attend for the food, the entertainment and the atmosphere, but many leave with something even more valuable: a greater understanding of the people who share their city.
This year’s festival welcomes two new pavilions, the Salvadorian Pavilion and the Heart of Romania Pavilion, adding new cultural experiences to an already diverse lineup. Returning pavilions include the Chilean Pavilion, First Nations Pavilion and Mexican Pavilion, all of which have previously been crowd favourites and important cultural ambassadors within the festival.
Several pavilions are also celebrating milestones of their own. The German Pavilion, Scandinavian Pavilion and Ukraine Kyiv Pavilion will each mark their 55th anniversaries alongside Folklorama itself, highlighting the long-standing commitment many communities have made to preserving and sharing their heritage with future generations.
The continued growth and evolution of Folklorama reflects a broader story about Winnipeg itself. Over the past five decades, the city has welcomed newcomers from every corner of the globe. Those communities have helped shape Winnipeg’s neighbourhoods, businesses, schools and cultural landscape, creating one of the most diverse urban centres in Canada.
Folklorama remains one of the few places where that diversity can be experienced in such an immersive way. A visitor can enjoy authentic Ukrainian dance, Filipino cuisine, Indigenous storytelling, Latin American music and European traditions all in a single evening. Few cultural festivals anywhere in North America offer that kind of breadth and authenticity.
The festival also continues to generate significant economic benefits for Winnipeg. Hotels, restaurants, transportation providers, tourism operators and local businesses all benefit from the influx of visitors who travel to Manitoba specifically to experience Folklorama. The festival’s impact extends well beyond the pavilion doors, helping support jobs and economic activity throughout the city.
Organizers are also continuing to expand visitor experiences through a growing selection of VIP tours. This year’s offerings include partnerships with Winnipeg Trolley Company and Pedal Pub Winnipeg, along with specialized beer, wine and zero-proof tours. Traditional motor coach, walking, cycling and accessible tours will also return, providing multiple ways for guests to experience the festival.
Single admission tickets are available for $7.50 plus applicable fees, while visitors can purchase a Vickar Automotive Group Multipack containing 10 admissions at a discounted rate. VIP tour experiences begin at $48.95. Cotroneo says anticipation continues to build as volunteers and organizers prepare for opening day.
“We anticipate these two weeks all year long and can’t wait to celebrate alongside our members as they showcase the rich and diverse talents and traditions that make up the community we live in.”
Before the festival officially begins, Winnipeggers will have an opportunity to get a preview of what is to come. Folklorama’s annual Casinos of Winnipeg Kick-off event will take place July 25 at Assiniboine Park’s Lyric Theatre and Field. The free event will feature cultural performances, a pavilion marketplace, food trucks, children’s activities, the Pavilion Ambassador Parade and a birthday celebration for the popular Folklorama Llama mascot.
For many residents, the kick-off serves as the unofficial start of Winnipeg’s cultural celebration season. It offers a glimpse into the extraordinary work performed by thousands of volunteers who spend months preparing performances, decorations, exhibits and menus that bring their cultural stories to life.
As Folklorama approaches its 55th year, its continued success serves as a reminder that Winnipeg’s greatest strength has always been its people. In a world often divided by differences, the festival continues to demonstrate the power of bringing communities together through food, music, art, dance and shared experiences. Fifty-five years after its founding, Folklorama remains more than a festival. It is a celebration of identity, heritage and community, and a reminder that Winnipeg’s multicultural story is still being written every day.
