Winnipeg is preparing for a significant winter storm that forecasters say could bring full blizzard conditions to the city beginning late Wednesday and extending into Thursday. The system is expected to deliver heavy snowfall, intense winds, and dangerously low visibility, creating conditions that could disrupt travel, strain city services, and pose serious safety risks for residents.

Meteorologists describe the approaching storm as a fast-moving but highly energetic Prairie system, capable of intensifying quickly once it reaches southern Manitoba. While snowfall alone would be manageable, the combination of snow and strong winds is what elevates this event to blizzard status. Visibility is expected to drop dramatically at times, particularly overnight and into the early morning hours.

Snow is forecast to begin accumulating Wednesday afternoon, initially light but becoming heavier as the evening progresses. By late evening and overnight, snowfall rates may increase significantly, with total accumulations expected to range between 10 and 20 centimetres across Winnipeg, with localized areas potentially receiving more. As the system strengthens, snow will be driven by powerful winds, reducing visibility to near zero in open areas and on major roadways.

Wind will be a major factor throughout this storm. Gusts are expected to reach 70 to 90 kilometres per hour, strong enough to create extensive blowing and drifting snow. Even areas that receive modest snowfall may experience severe travel conditions as snow is repeatedly blown back onto roads, sidewalks, and driveways. These winds will also make outdoor conditions feel far colder than the actual air temperature.

As colder air moves in behind the system, temperatures will drop sharply. Wind chill values are expected to plunge well below minus 30, creating an elevated risk of frostbite for anyone exposed to the elements for even short periods of time. Prolonged exposure without proper winter clothing could become dangerous very quickly, especially overnight and into Thursday morning.

Travel is expected to be one of the most significant impacts of this storm. Road conditions are likely to deteriorate rapidly once the snow and wind intensify. Whiteout conditions may develop suddenly, making it difficult or impossible to see other vehicles, road markings, or obstacles. Authorities are urging residents to avoid non-essential travel during the height of the storm, particularly overnight and early Thursday.

Those who must travel are advised to prepare emergency kits, ensure vehicles are fully fueled, and inform others of their route and expected arrival time. With visibility reduced and drifting snow common, even short trips could become hazardous.

City crews are expected to be on standby for snow clearing operations, but the combination of heavy snowfall and high winds may slow response times. Drifts can reform quickly even after plowing, and residents should be prepared for delays in snow removal on residential streets and sidewalks. Public transit may also experience disruptions depending on road conditions and visibility.

Residents are encouraged to take precautionary steps ahead of the storm. Securing outdoor items, ensuring homes are adequately heated, and stocking essential supplies can reduce the need to travel during the worst conditions. Checking in on elderly neighbours, people with mobility challenges, and those who may be vulnerable to extreme cold is also strongly encouraged.

Blizzard conditions are expected to gradually ease later Thursday, but blowing snow and bitter cold may persist even after snowfall tapers off. Cleanup and recovery could take time, and lingering winter conditions are likely to continue into the days that follow.
