WeBelieve! Coach Prime’s Historic Win For Colorado Buffaloes Is A Win For HBCUs

In the exhilarating world of college football, few tales rival the awe-inspiring journey of the Colorado Buffaloes, led by the charismatic Coach Deion Sanders, fondly referred to as “Prime Time.” Saturday’s opening day clash against the TCU Horned Frogs, unquestionably the game of the day in college football is an electrifying testament to the potent forces of self-belief and transformation.

The Colorado Buffaloes, a team that had languished in mediocrity for nearly three decades, faced the formidable TCU Horned Frogs, defending runner-ups to the National Championship and heavily favored by almost three touchdowns. This matchup seemed destined for a predictable outcome on paper, but what transpired on the field was extraordinary.

During the off-season, coach Prime faced relentless scrutiny for his bold and unapologetic approach to rebuilding the Buffaloes. He drastically changed the roster, cutting or revoking scholarships from nearly 90% of the players. He brought in new talent, including his superstar sons: at quarterback, Shedeur Sanders, and another on defense Shilo Sanders. In addition to a highly sought-after two-way five-star recruit, Travis Hunter, who transferred from Jackson State to play for Colorado.

Hunter was the overall number one collegiate player in the country and turned down scholarship offers from all the NCAA Division 1 elite programs to attend Jackson State, a Historically Black College (HBCU). Hunter wanted to be coached by Coach Deion Sanders, the best to ever play the defensive back in the game. He was confident his skills would get him to the NFL, and being a pupil under Coach Prime would get him there. Critics throughout the off-season questioned the wisdom of these moves. Still, Coach Prime remained unwavering in his belief that significant changes were necessary to transform the Buffaloes into a championship-caliber team.

In addition to their remarkable victory against TCU, the Colorado Buffaloes managed to silence critics who had questioned the ability of athletes transitioning from a traditional HBCU, specifically Jackson State under Coach Prime, to compete at the Division 1 level. Historically Black Colleges and Universities have a rich and storied history in American sports. Established during segregation, these institutions became nurturing grounds for exceptional athletic talent, providing opportunities for Black athletes when other avenues were often closed.

HBCUs have produced numerous NFL stars over the years, showcasing the depth of talent they’ve cultivated. Notable alumni from HBCUs in which many have achieved Hall of Fame Status include Jerry Rice, one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history, who attended Mississippi Valley State University, and Walter Payton, another NFL legend who hailed from Jackson State University. In addition to the great Shannon Sharpe, Michael Strahan, Richard Dent, Steve McNair and countless others. These HBCUs were, in fact, Division I schools in their own right, and they were often sought after by larger programs to recruit top athletes. The success of these athletes demonstrates that talent transcends the institution’s label and that HBCU athletes can excel at the highest levels of competition and academics.

Coach Prime’s decision to recruit and bring talented players from Jackson State to Colorado sent a powerful message. It showcased the belief in the potential of these athletes and their ability to thrive in a Division 1 atmosphere. As the Buffaloes continue to rise under Coach Prime’s leadership, it’s clear that talent, dedication, and coaching excellence can overcome preconceived notions about the source of that talent. The success of these athletes not only represents their journey but also pays homage to the legacy of HBCUs in producing top-tier athletes who can shine on the biggest stages in college football and beyond.

Coach Prime’s impact extended far beyond the football field. He revived a desolate program with empty stands, and the few fans that attended had paper bags covering their faces. The atmosphere in Colorado radically transformed, with the Buffaloes becoming the hottest ticket in town. College football bore witness to its highest-ranking regular-season game in recent history, all thanks to Coach Prime’s vision, determination, and unshakable belief.

As the Buffaloes return home to play against Nebraska in a sold-out stadium, a sense of excitement and optimism hasn’t been seen in decades. Coach Prime’s era has officially begun, and the Buffaloes are must-see TV in college football. Just as he did at Jackson State, Deion Sanders has proven that he knows what he’s doing, and the entire NCAA football world is taking notice. The Colorado Buffaloes are back, and they’re here to stay.
