Canada Post Honors Forgotten Black History with Commemorative Stamp
In celebration of Black History Month, Canada Post has unveiled a commemorative stamp honoring the forgotten community of Amber Valley, Alberta. Founded in the early 1900s by hundreds of African-Americans escaping racial violence and segregation in the United States, Amber Valley holds a profound place in Canadian history.
Located 170 kilometers north of Edmonton, Amber Valley was a thriving all-Black settlement that offered a refuge for those seeking a better life. Despite facing numerous challenges, including harsh weather conditions and limited resources, the community persevered and flourished.
The commemorative stamp, featuring a stunning illustration of the Amber Valley landscape, serves as a poignant reminder of the community’s resilience and determination. By acknowledging this often-overlooked chapter in Canadian history, Canada Post aims to educate and inspire Canadians about the country’s rich and diverse heritage.
As we celebrate Black History Month, the story of Amber Valley reminds us of the power of courage, perseverance, and community. Let us honor the legacy of this remarkable settlement and continue to work towards a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
