Grocery Cheques Go This Week to 11 Million Canadians

The new Grocery Rebate introduced as part of the Canadian government’s 2023 budget is being issued today, along with the next quarterly GST/HST credit payment. Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance announced that 11 million low- and modest-income Canadians and families will be issued their new, one-time Grocery Rebate throughout the week. The rebate will be double the GST/HST credit amount received for January 2023.

This rebate aims to provide inflation relief to Canadians and families who can benefit from financial support. “While inflation in Canada has fallen to 3.4 per cent in May – down from 4.4 per cent in April, and from a high of 8.1 per cent last June, rising grocery prices remain a challenge for too many Canadians.” Chrystia Freeland acknowledged. This important rebate won’t affect Canada’s AAA credit rating and strong track record of fiscal responsibility.

There’s a criterion to meet to receive the rebate. The amounts of money received in the rebate vary and are calculated based on Canadian family situations in January 2023 and adjusted income from 2021. Single individuals with no children can receive a maximum of $234. In contrast, single-parent families with 1-4 children may receive between $387-$628. Married couples or common-law partners with no children can receive up to $306, and those with 1-4 children can receive $387-$628. Seniors can receive an extra $225.

As Canada continues to help Canadians with complex financial situations, this rebate may relieve stress for many currently facing hardships.
