Minister Kamal Khera has announced a substantial investment in Seva Food Bank’s groundbreaking “Meals for Seniors” program to enhance the quality of life for the country’s aging population. The project, part of the broader Age Well at Home Initiative by the Government of Canada, aims to empower seniors to age gracefully within their familiar communities.

Located in Mississauga and Brampton, Ontario, it has secured funding of up to $465,841 and was among the selected proposals nationwide. The broader program is slated to receive funding of up to $39.6 million, supporting 71 deserving organizations.

The primary objective of these pilot projects is to mobilize volunteers, providing essential support to seniors who may face challenges in maintaining their independence. The organization’s mandate aligns seamlessly with the government’s goals, offering services such as meal preparation, light housekeeping, and transportation to those in need.

Iqwinder Gaheer, Member of Parliament for Mississauga—Malton, expressed pride in Seva Food Bank’s role in supporting vulnerable communities. Gaheer stated, “Our government is investing in Seva Food Bank and the incredible services they provide.”

Vipin Saini, Executive Director of Seva Food Bank, emphasized the increasing struggle of many within the elderly community, especially those with limited resources, to access nutritious meals. Saini highlighted the importance of regular check-ins, helping connect an aging population to essential services across the Peel Region. Part of the initiative, the Scaling Up for Independence stream allocates up to $22.2 million in funding to 21 organizations to expand existing services into new provinces and territories.

Seniors represent one of Canada’s fastest-growing population groups, projected to make up almost 25% of the population by 2057. With a commitment to their well-being, the government has increased support for those aged 75 and older and provided additional financial assistance for low-income individuals.

Seamus O’Regan Jr., Minister of Labour and Seniors, expressed the government’s dedication to investing in organizations and volunteers who positively impact people’s lives, making communities stronger in the process.

As the government continues to address the evolving needs of the aging community, these initiatives are important to fostering a society where every individual can age with dignity, surrounded by the support of their communities.
