Mississauga, Ontario – In a major victory against drug trafficking, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced the successful seizure of 29 kg of suspected cocaine from a commercial aircraft arriving in Canada. The interception occurred on November 30, 2023, at Toronto Pearson International Airport, where vigilant border services officers collaborated with the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Region Specialized Border Interdiction Unit.

The CBSA, dedicated to disrupting the inflow of illicit drugs into the country and safeguarding communities, has been relentless in its pursuit of curbing drug-related crimes. The recent operation underscores the agency’s commitment to these objectives.

Upon the arrival of a plane from Guyana, border services officers initiated an examination, and suspicions were heightened when a GTA Region detector dog services team identified a positive indication on one particular bag. A thorough inspection of the bag revealed 25 brick-shaped packages containing a total of 29 kg of suspected cocaine.

Lisa Janes, the Regional Director General of the Canada Border Services Agency for the Greater Toronto Area Region, emphasized the importance of such operations in safeguarding communities: “The importation of illicit drugs leads to increased crime in our communities, narcotics abuse, and possibly deaths by overdose. Officers in the Greater Toronto Area Region remain vigilant in our work to ensure the safety of all Canadians.”

This successful operation is a collaborative effort between the Canada Border Services Agency and its partners, notably the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. The joint cooperation and information-sharing among these entities play a pivotal role in fortifying border security and protecting communities from the adverse effects of drug-related activities.

The discovery of the suspected cocaine, neatly concealed in the intercepted packages, highlights the sophistication of drug trafficking methods and the constant need for heightened vigilance on the part of border security personnel.

The CBSA deploys advanced detection techniques and technology, including using specially trained canine units, to combat illicit substance smuggling effectively. These efforts, coupled with the commitment of border agents, contribute significantly to maintaining the safety and well-being of Canadians.

As the investigation unfolds, the CBSA remains dedicated to pursuing those responsible for this attempted illegal importation. The agency’s stance against drug trafficking is evident in its ongoing operations, ensuring the safety of Canadian communities.
