Terror Strikes Vancouver’s Lapu-Lapu Festival

On the evening of April 26, 2025, Vancouver’s Filipino community gathered to celebrate Lapu Lapu Day—a vibrant festival honoring the Philippines’ first national hero, Datu Lapu-Lapu. The event, filled with music, food, and cultural pride, was tragically disrupted when a black SUV drove into the crowd at East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street shortly after 8 p.m., resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The driver is currently in custody, and authorities are investigating the incident.

Lapu Lapu Day, officially recognized in British Columbia since 2023, celebrates Filipino heritage and the spirit of resistance embodied by Datu Lapu-Lapu, who famously defied Spanish colonization in the 16th century. The festival has become a symbol of unity and cultural pride for Vancouver’s Filipino community .

In the wake of this tragedy, community leaders are calling for solidarity and healing. Pastor Ali Feizi of the Gospel Tabernacle, a respected figure in Vancouver’s faith community, offered words of hope:

“In moments like these, we must come together, support one another, and find strength in our shared humanity. Let us honor the lives lost by fostering unity and compassion within our community.”

As investigations continue, the community remains united in grief and determination to support those affected. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of community resilience and the enduring spirit of togetherness.
