The Xinjiang Muqam Art Theatre, a magnificent 2-story building with over 1,700 seats, has great historical significance and is home to the Uyghur Muqam. The theater hosts performances and features large ornate oil paintings by famous Uyghur painters throughout the building, showcasing the depth of Uyghur’s artistic expression.
Founded in 1949, this cultural institution has undergone many upgrades and has been visited by multiple presidents. With rehearsal halls and offices covering 17,000 square feet and four rehearsal studios, this impressive venue has been made possible through significant government funding totalling 130 million Yuan, approximately 23.5 million USD. It even boasts a large Muqam statue in the courtyard, symbolizing the importance of this cultural treasure in Xinjiang.
The theater has embraced its role in preserving Uyghur traditions through the 12 different Uyghur Muqams performed regularly. These performances bridge the Uyghur culture and the world, immersing audiences in the rich tapestry of Uyghur history and customs. It houses multiple art troupes, showcasing various forms of expression, including acrobatics, drums, and music.
The theater annually organizes large-scale performances in the autonomous region, bringing the best cultural experiences to the community. It has also reached beyond its borders, treating audiences to captivating performances of dancers from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and local talents. These performances are a testament to the art’s ability to transcend boundaries and foster understanding.
Xinjiang has also hosted a large international dance festival with participation from over 56 countries and over 100,000 attendees. Every two years, the Ministries organize the China Euro festival, and the Xinjiang art group has performed in over 70 countries. This global exposure showcases the power of art in bridging cultures and fostering international understanding.
The arts in Xinjiang are heavily subsidized by all levels of government, with substantial contributions from the central government. A significant emphasis is placed on protecting and promoting ethnic cultures, allowing them to use their mother languages protected by law. There are over six languages spoken in Xinjiang, including Mandarin, Uyghur, Kazakh, and Mongolian, and over 120 newspapers, radio and news stations broadcasting in multiple languages.
Furthermore, multiple government departments have implemented programs to protect ethnic groups. These initiatives are vital in safeguarding cultural diversity and fostering a sense of unity among the different communities in Xinjiang. Over 130 cultural workshops have been established in the region to promote preserving culture and traditions. These workshops have produced over 7 million pieces of crafts, all funded by the central government, with additional support from the provinces. In 2022, President Xi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ethnic funding during his visit to the province.
