The leadership race is down to the final two members to become U.Ks next Prime Minister

As of Wednesday, 20, 2022, two candidates are left in the race to become the U.K.’s new Prime Minister. The race is down to Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. Sunak won with 137 votes, and Truss had 113. Truss and Sunak will now begin campaigning to their local party branches.

On August 5th, the conservative party members will receive voting ballots, and candidates will have six weeks to secure their party’s support. The 180,000 members will have until 5 pm on September 2nd to get their votes in, and the results will get announced on September 5th.

Liz Truss was the foreign secretary of the English Parliament. She says she will lower taxes and increase national defense spending in the Prime Minister role. The right-wing side of the Parliament favors Truss and, because of this, seems to have the chance to take this final vote.

Truss went to public high school and attended Oxford University, where she studied philosophy, politics, and economics. Afterward, she worked for Shell and Cable and Wireless. Truss ran for office twice unsuccessfully, and Finally, on the third try, she was elected to represent the eastern England seat in 2010. Truss was made a Foreign secretary in 2021 by Boris Johnson. With Johnson’s resignation, Truss is eager to fill his shoes.

Rishi Sunak was the former chancellor and dealt with the finance and budgets for the Parliament. Sunak has a Thatcherite view and believes that if he does not win, the country will be threatened to decline. If elected, he will be the first South Asian leader of the U.K.

Sunak went to Winchester College, a private school then attended Oxford and studied philosophy, politics, and economics. After he graduated, he got his M.B.A. at Stanford University. After his education, Sunak worked for an investment bank in the U.S. In 2015, when he returned to England, he was elected into Parliament for the safe Tory seat of Richmond in Yorkshire. Five years later, in 202, Sunak was selected to be the chancellor of the exchequer by Boris Johnson.

During his time, Sunak implemented the furlough program. This program helped during COVID-19 helping millions of laid-off workers get paid a salary. In his promotions, Sunken advocated for low taxes and promised to gain control over the rising inflation.

After weeks of dramatic events and multiple voting sessions, the new Prime Minister is getting closer and closer to being named. Within a couple of weeks, Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak will make history when either becomes the next UK Prime Minister.
