On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) is being held in Beijing from Oct 17 to 18. The theme of the third BRF is “High-quality Belt and Road Cooperation: Together for Common Development and Prosperity.”
BRI is a monumental global project proposed by China in 2013, aiming to foster connectivity, cooperation, and development among countries along the ancient Silk Road trade routes. This initiative is a modern-day precursor to the historic Silk Road, a network of interconnected trade routes that shaped the world’s history, fostered cultural inclusivity, and connected diverse civilizations.

However, there are still hold outs from nations such as Germany, Great Britian, the United States and Canada due to geopolitical pacts. All who have significant trade agreements with China cumulative in the trillions of dollars. Their decision represents a massively missed opportunity for their business communities, particularly those specializing in industries like mining, construction, healthcare, and technology, to actively participate in projects that could greatly contribute to economic growth and job creation in their countries.
The BRI is not merely about rekindling trade routes; it aims to address contemporary challenges by enhancing connectivity, infrastructure, and cooperation on an unprecedented scale. The importance of the it lies in its potential to open up new trade routes that were previously nonexistent or underutilized. By investing trillions of dollars into the global economy, the BRI is poised to revolutionize trade and transportation, creating countless opportunities for underdeveloped nations in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Many of these countries have historically been underfunded, witnessed infrastructure destruction due to conflicts, or suffered from the uneven distribution of natural resources.
China’s role in this initiative is paramount. Thousands of mega and small-scale projects are set to create millions of jobs and contribute to global transformation, which many have already begun or completed. The BRI will connect the world like never before through land, seaports, railways, and bridges. Its essence lies in its non-contingency on changing government structures ideologies, or adhering to specific socio-economic rules. It’s about working with any government and connecting everyone to enable trade, making it a massive win for global civilization.
The Belt and Road Initiative operates on five fundamental principles, each emphasizing the collaborative and inclusive nature of the project:
I. Proposed by China but Belonging to the Whole World – The BRI is a Chinese initiative, but its benefits are intended to be shared globally.
II. Paving the Way Towards Shared Development and Prosperity – The BRI seeks to improve all participating nations’ wellbeing and economic prospects.
III. Promoting All-Round Connectivity in Multiple Fields – Infrastructure, trade, and cultural connections are vital aspects of the initiative.
IV. Injecting Positive Energy into World Peace and Development – The BRI contributes to global peace by promoting cooperation and understanding.
V. Pursuing Steady and Sustained Progress in High-Quality BRI Cooperation – The focus is on maintaining high standards, mutual benefit, and risk-sharing.
The Belt and Road Initiative represents humanity’s joint pursuit of development for all. Over the past 10 years, the Belt and Road international cooperation has gotten off the ground, grown rapidly and produced fruitful outcomes. In the keynote speech, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered at the opening ceremony of the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, he announced that China will take eight major steps to support high-quality Belt and Road cooperation:
1. Build a multidimensional belt and road connectivity network.
2. Support an open world economy.
3. Carry out practical cooperation to support high-quality Belt and Road construction.
4. Promote green development.
5. Advance scientific and technological innovation.
6. Support people-to-people exchanges.
7. Promote integrity-based Belt and Road cooperation.
8. Strengthen institutional building for international Belt and Road cooperation.

It is eager to expand cooperation with more nations and international organizations, allowing all countries to experience shared development and prosperity.
