Sinema & Manchin Vote With GOP And Kill Voting Rights Bill

Manchin and Sinema are not up for re-election in 2022, so they can hold the Biden Administration hostage as much as the desire

The cheers on the U.S Senate floor after last night’s vote were so loud, that you would think they passed a bipartisan piece of legislation. Sadly, it was the jubilation of Senate Republicans along with Democratic Senators Manchin and Sinema, killed the Voters’ Rights Bill.

In order to pass this Bill, all members of the Democratic Party need to be in favour of passing the legislation. While nearly all of them do agree with this plan, Senator Kyrsten Sinema and Senator Joe Manchin, voted with their Republican colleagues.

If passed, the Bill would change the Filibuster rules in the Senate allowing 50 votes instead of 60 to pass any legislation. This would have effectively done away with the Filibuster rule that is seen as racist and often used to block legislation in favour of equality and those that mainly affect minorities and marginalized Americans.

Manchin and Sinema have been obstructionists to the Biden Administration from day 1. Their reason for voting against the Filibuster was to preserve the integrity of the Senate. Unfortunately, they are not fooling anyone with their lies and lack of integrity. Both are beholden to their big corporate donors and are raking in the campaign donations from lobbyists.

A vote to do away with the Filibuster means Democrats would be able to pass meaningful legislation that addresses climate change, police brutality and voting rights. And if that were to happen, it would be to the detriment of Manchin and Sinema. Both Senators are heavily invested in the coal industry and have big corporate donors who benefit from having republicans in charge of all three levels of government. Therefore, their actions in the Senate are a direct reflection of their corporate donors and not the people who voted for them.

In addition, neither Senator is up for re-election in 2022. Sinema in 2024 and Manchin in 2025, which means they are not vulnerable to losing their seats this year. Unfortunately for voters, when it comes time to put their names on the ballot for re-election, they will beg for forgiveness and act as if nothing has happened.

The damage has been done, and the Democratic Party has already started their candidate search to replace both Senators who are Democrats in Name Only.
