For more than three decades, Ana and Luis Esteves have been part of Winnipeg’s heartbeat — a couple whose lives have revolved around food, family, and the kind of service that goes far beyond business. Their story is one of courage, community, and commitment — of two people who built something meaningful by working side by side and never losing sight of what truly matters.
When news spread that their flagship restaurant, Viena Do Castelo, would begin winding down, the city’s response was immediate. Friends, customers, and fellow restaurateurs flooded social media with messages of thanks and respect. It wasn’t just about losing a place to eat — it was about celebrating the people behind it. The outpouring spoke volumes about the kind of impact they’ve had.
For over thirty years, Ana’s culinary skill has been woven into Manitoba’s dining fabric. Her approach has always been about more than ingredients; it’s about people — feeding them, connecting with them, making them feel seen. From early days in small kitchens to the opening of Viena Do Castelo in 2011, she earned a reputation as one of the province’s true culinary pillars.
But behind every great kitchen is a team, and this one has always been a partnership. When Luis left his corporate career in banking, he didn’t step into the background — he stepped fully in. Together, they handled every task the day demanded, from catering and deliveries to long nights preparing for festivals and community events. In their world, there were no job titles, only shared effort.
They often smile, remembering those first years — the long shifts, the steady hum of conversation, and their child asleep nearby, barely a week old, while the scent of garlic and fresh herbs and spices filled the air. It was a family dream in motion, held together by determination and a belief that hard work could feed both body and soul.

Over the years, Viena Do Castelo became more than a restaurant; it became a gathering place for those who craved authenticity. During Folklorama, the couple and their small team would prepare and serve thousands of plates of Portuguese food — a gesture of pride in their heritage and gratitude to the community that supported them.
In that same year, 2011, they also took a bold step and acquired Harmans Meal Service — a company that now delivers fresh, home-cooked meals to seniors, veterans, and Manitobans living on fixed incomes. It’s the only service in the province recognized by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) for providing daily fresh meals.
Menus are planned months in advance to ensure variety, nutrition, and balance — and each meal costs only $10, including taxes and delivery. Through partnerships with Veterans Affairs, MPI, and the WRHA, Harmans has become a trusted name, known for consistency and compassion. The couple also donate meals each year to those in need, doing so quietly, without fanfare — just as they always have.
What makes Harmans special isn’t just the food; it’s the connection. Every delivery is a moment of human contact — a chance to share a smile, exchange a few kind words, and remind someone that they are seen and cared for. For many clients, especially seniors living alone, that brief conversation at the door can be the highlight of their day. And while much of Harmans clientele are seniors, the service is open to anyone — families, professionals, or anyone who simply wants access to a wholesome, freshly prepared meal without the rush of cooking. It’s not just about feeding people; it’s about nourishing lives.

If there’s one thing that defines their journey, it’s how they’ve done it together. Whether in the kitchen, on the road, or behind the scenes, it’s always been an all-hands-on-deck family business. Every decision, every challenge, every milestone — faced as a team.
Now, with the restaurant transitioning to focus on large catering events and special pop-up experiences, they’ve entered a new chapter — one that offers more balance, but no less purpose. It’s a natural evolution, rooted in the same commitment to quality and community that’s guided them from the start.
Their story isn’t about closing doors; it’s about opening new ones — about feeding more people, giving back in new ways, and continuing to do what they’ve always done best: serve with heart.
For over thirty years, Ana and Luis have shown that success isn’t about fame or fortune. It’s about integrity, about putting people first, and about never losing the joy of seeing someone smile after a good meal.
That’s the legacy they’ve built — one plate, one act of kindness, one community at a time.
