Former City Councillor Kevin Klein Wins Kirkfield By-Election

Klein will fill the vacated seat left by Scott Fielding

Former Winnipeg City Councillor and Mayoral candidate Kevin Klein win the Kirkfield by-election, nearly beating our N.D.P. candidate Logan Oxenham. The seat became vacant earlier in the year when Scott Field, a former City Councillor, had tendered his resignation.

With a voter turnout of 36.48%, Conservative candidate Klein squeaked by with 36.97% to claim his seat in the Manitoba Legislature. The N.D.P.’s Oxenham picked up 34.46%, and a surprise showing by Liberal candidate Rhonda Nichol coming in thirds with 27.32% of the vote.

Last night saw Manitoba’s third by-election for 2022, with the NDP winning the vacated seat in Thomspon and the Conservative party barely crossing the finish line to hold onto former Premier Pallister’s Fort Whyte seat won by retired Blue Bommer Obby Khan. With Klein’s win, the Manitoba P.C. can have a tempered celebration as the margin of victory in a Conservative stronghold is of concern.

It appears that N.D.P. and Conservative parties will compete to form government in 2023. Manitobans head to the poll in October 2023 to choose their next government.
