Could The Next U.K Prime Minister Be Liz Truss?

Now that Boris Johnson has resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, there is a fight to see who will fill that spot.

On Sunday, June 10th, 2022, the current Conservative Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, has thrown in her bid for the chance to become the next Prime Minister of Britain. Truss was raised by parents with non-government jobs and attended Oxford University. People have polarizing views of her; some describe her as creative, while others say she is too drastic in her actions and claims.

In 2010, Truss was elected the Member of Parliament (M.P.) for South West Norfolk. As the M.P, she worked with the free enterprise groups to lower taxes for the United Kingdom (U.K.) In 2012, Truss was appointed Junior Education Minister. In this position, Truss focused on improving math lessons and sought ways to lower the cost of childcare.

Two years later, in 2014, Truss became the Secretary of state for Environmental, Food, and Rural Affairs. And in 2016, Truss backed the Remain party in the debate on Brexit. Truss was against leaving the E.U, but a few years later, she changed her mind and showed support for Brexit.

In 2021, Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed Truss his International Trade Secretary. While in this position, she was also the Minister for Women and Equality. A little while after, Truss got promoted to Foreign Secretary. Now that the spot is open for the Prime Minister, Truss launched her bid to fill Johnson’s seat over the weekend.

In her bid, Truss explained the three significant changes she would like to implement if she wins. These include tax cuts to help with the high cost of living, an overhaul of business rates, and reversing the national insurance rise.

With her intent to be the U.K.’s next Prime Minister, Truss has picked up early endorsements from M.P.’s Kemi Badenoch, Michael Gove, and Therese Coffey, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

The voting will begin soon, and in a few weeks, or a couple of months, Liz Truss or another Conservative MP could be named Britain’s new Prime Minister.
