Private investor firm BBVA Mexico and Grupo Mexico made a generous donation to the people of Mexico for the treatment of COVID-19.  The donation is part of the public-private strategy included in the “Together for Health” global initiative, whose goal is to equip the country’s hospitals with the supplies they need to treat their patients and to provide frontline health personnel with personal protective equipment.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the Foreign Ministry has coordinated the acquisition of medical supplies from abroad for Mexico’s health system.  The BBVA donation is part of these efforts. BBVA México has donated 1,000 ventilators over the past few weeks. Grupo Mexico has donated 548 ventilators of various types, of which 48 arrived on the May 12 Mexico-China airlift operated by Aeromexico and 500 arrived yesterday from Chicago.  To date, a total of 3,289 ventilators have been received: 2,241 of them from the United States on two flights from Nevada and one from Chicago; and 1,048 from China.

Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard expressed his appreciation for the private sector’s collaboration during this emergency and spoke about the importance of solidarity between nations in times of need.  The Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Martha Delgado, highlighted the role of international and multilateral cooperation for coordinating the joint actions of nations in times of crisis, explaining the high degree of coordination that has taken place since the inauguration of the Mexico-China airlift.

With the arrival of these medical supplies, Mexico has increased its ability to treat patients with severe symptoms and is better able to address the most serious effects of the pandemic, such as hospital saturation, in coordination with the General Health Council strategy.
