Public servants fall within the mandatory vaccination requirement to maintain their employment with the Canadian government
COVID-19 cases across Canada fluctuate from coast to coast to coast. As the government continues to pour billions of dollars into propping up the economy, preventing a government-wide spread of COVID became a priority. This meant all government employees must be vaccinated to remain in their employ.
The move by the federal government requiring mandatory vaccination was is in line with that of other countries and well within their mandate. The Government of Canada is the country’s largest employer and the decison to make vaccines mandatory was met with some resistance, but not enough for civil servants to risk losing their jobs.
“A month ago, we asked employees of the federal public service to attest to their vaccination status. They stepped up. As of today, 99.7% of public servants have attested. I can now report that 95% of the approximately 268,000 federal public servants have confirmed they are fully vaccinated. Together with those who have had one shot, 98% of public servants are either fully or partially vaccinated. This data is being made available and updated on a weekly basis.” Mona Fortier, President of the Treasury Board,
The unvaccinated employees amount to approximately 1% of employees who will seek a special exemption to remain employed by the government, however each situation will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis in basis.
