Concern is growing for 16-year-old Jay’siiah Webb-Long, a Black youth from Brampton, Ontario, whose disappearance has now been deemed suspicious by the Saskatchewan RCMP.

Jay’siiah had been residing in Pelican Narrows, Saskatchewan, around the time of his disappearance and was last in contact with his family on May 16, 2025, via social media. As the investigation escalates, Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit has officially taken over the case.

He is described as a 5’11”, slim Black male with shoulder-length curly black hair, styled in braids. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Missing and Overlooked: The Disproportionate Disappearance of Black Youth in Ontario

Jay’siiah’s case highlights a troubling and ongoing crisis in Ontario: the disproportionate number of missing Black youth compared to their representation in the population. According to One Vision One Voice and the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies, Black children make up just 4% of Ontario’s population under 18, yet they are significantly overrepresented in the child welfare system — a risk factor often linked to youth going missing. Additionally, Missing Children Society of Canada data consistently reveals that racialized youth, particularly Black and Indigenous children, are reported missing at a much higher rate and often receive less media attention.

This lack of visibility and urgency in such cases is a systemic issue that must be addressed.

Community Responsibility and Call to Action

The Black community in Ontario—and across Canada—must take a proactive stance in protecting and watching over our youth. The crisis of missing Black children is not just a policing issue; it’s a community one.

Families, community leaders, faith groups, and advocacy organizations must come together to create support networks, mentor programs, and safe spaces that help youth stay connected, supported, and visible. Our children are not disposable, and their disappearances cannot continue to go unnoticed or uninvestigated.

Do You Know Something? Say Something

Jay’siiah’s disappearance is still under active investigation. Authorities are urging anyone with information—no matter how small—to come forward.
