After Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday the return of the two Canadian citizens imprisoned by the Chinese government back in 2018, their safe landing on Canadian soil remains jubilant.

Although the Chinese government denies any connection between detaining the two Canadians and the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, President Xi Jinping’s announcement to release them came only hours after the release of Meng Wanzhou. Many diplomats continue to accuse China of using the two Canadians for political gains.

The two Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor met Prime Minister Trudeau when they landed in Calgary on Saturday morning. Mr Spavor was reunited with his family, while Mr Kovrig took a plane to Toronto to reunite with his family.

“Welcome home, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. You’ve shown incredible strength, resilience, and perseverance. Know that Canadians across the country will continue to be here for you, just as they have been.” Said, Prime Minister.

While it is hard to imagine how difficult it must have been for Mr Kovrig and Mr Spavor in a Chinese prison, it has been equally painful for their families.

“The experience is heartbreaking most of the time but I also try to remember that we are not alone in this” Said, Vina Nadjibulla, Michael Kovrig’s wife.

“We hoped we didn’t have to be here or certainly not in the same situation but we are here and it is important to mark this day” Said, Paul Spavor, Michael Spavor’s brother.

The two Michael’s home coming puts an end to a 1000 days of imprisonment by the Chinese government.
