Quebec Lower Flags To Half Mast Honouring Grand Chief Max Gros-Louis

Grand Chief Max Gros-Louis served as Chief of the Huron nation for 33 years

QUEBEC, In honour of Grand Chief Max Gros-Louis’ passing, the Quebec flag will be at half mast on the central tower of the Parliament Building, on the day of the funeral, Thursday, 19 November 2020, from dawn to dusk, at the request of the Premier of Quebec, Mr. François Legault.

The President of the National Assembly on behalf of his parliamentary colleague, offered their sincere condolences to the family and relatives of Mr. Gros-Louis.

Max Gros-Louis was Grand Chief of the Huron-Wendat Nation for 33 years as well as Director and Vice-Chief of the Assembly of First Nations of Canada for ten years. Grand Chief was made an officer of the National Order of Quebec in 2011, he was made a member of the National Order of Canada in 2016.

In 1964 he was elected Grand Chief of the Huron-Wendat Nation in Wendake. At this time the reservation measured just 16 hectares (40 acres; 0.062 sq mi) and Gros-Louis negotiated an increase in size to 164 hectares (410 acres). He also negotiated the boundary of the nation’s ancestral land with that of the Between 1965 and 1976 he was successively a founding member, vice president and secretary-treasurer of the Association des Indiens du Québec. Gros-Louis was involved in creating the “Indians of Canada” pavilion at the Expo 67 world’s fair in Montreal. In 1970 he became the Quebec representative to the National Indian Brotherhood. Wiki
