As the world marked the fourth anniversary of the controversial U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, a new wave of violence has erupted in Kerman, Iran. Tasnim news agency was the first to report unnamed sources alleging two bombs, strategically placed in suitcases, were said to be detonated remotely near Soleimani’s tomb, resulting in a tragic toll of over 100 lives lost and 150 individuals injured. The devastating attack has prompted Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to declare Thursday, Jan. 4, as a day of national mourning in honor of the victims.

In the aftermath of the terror attack, President Raisi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and condemned the perpetrators of the “cowardly act.” Raisi assured the nation that the capable security and law enforcement forces would swiftly identify and punish those responsible for this heinous act.

As the nation mourns the loss of its citizens, the question that looms large is: Who ordered and executed this terror attack on the Iranian people?

Speculations regarding the orchestrators of the attack are rampant, but as of now, no group or individual has claimed responsibility. This lack of accountability adds to the complexity of an already tense situation, fueling concerns of a deliberate attempt to destabilize the region further.

The terror attack in Kerman comes at a time when the Middle East is grappling with multiple conflicts. The ongoing war in Gaza with Hamas, Israeli Defense Force (IDF) operations in Yemen and Lebanon, and Houthi attacks on Israeli cargo ships in the Red Sea as a response to the destruction of Gaza have created a volatile environment, with US warships on the doorsteps of the Middle East.

As the world witnesses the first days of 2024, it is evident that the year has been marred by disasters and conflicts from around the globe. The attacks in Kerman add another layer of complexity to an already intricate geopolitical landscape, with potential repercussions for regional and global instability.

The terror attack in Kerman has raised serious questions about the motives behind such violence and the potential actors involved. As investigations unfold, the international community watches closely, cognizant of the broader implications for regional stability. The need for a coordinated and measured response is paramount, with hopes that a thorough investigation will shed light on those responsible for this tragic event.
