BROSSARD, QC – The Montreal Canadiens have added some homegrown talent to their forward group, announcing Wednesday that centerman Joe Veleno has signed a one-year, one-way contract with the club for the 2025-26 NHL season.

Veleno, 25, split the 2024-25 season between the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks, tallying 17 points (8 goals, 9 assists) over 74 games. After being traded to Chicago at the NHL Trade Deadline, the Montreal native contributed seven points in 18 games to finish the campaign.

Now entering his sixth NHL season, Veleno brings over 300 games of league experience, having debuted with Detroit in 2020-21. Over 306 career games, he’s totaled 38 goals and 43 assists, along with 98 penalty minutes. His most productive year came in 2023-24 when he registered career highs with 12 goals, 16 assists, and 28 points.

Originally selected 30th overall in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft by the Red Wings, the 6-foot-1, 201-pound forward was widely viewed as a gifted prospect with speed, tenacity, and responsible two-way play.

Bringing Veleno into the fold offers a low-risk depth move for general manager Kent Hughes and the Canadiens’ front office. The one-way nature of the deal suggests the organization sees him as a full-time NHL contributor and a potential fit in the team’s middle-six or as a versatile option in multiple roles.

For Veleno, it’s a homecoming of sorts. A product of Montreal’s vibrant hockey scene, he now has the opportunity to play in front of family and friends — and perhaps reinvigorate his career trajectory with the team he grew up watching.

The Canadiens continue to blend youthful potential with experienced support as they look to turn the corner in their rebuilding efforts. Veleno’s addition offers both — a player with untapped upside who’s already proven capable of contributing at the NHL level.

Details of the contract, including salary, were not disclosed.
