Navigating the world as a Black individual in Quebec was akin to walking a tightrope, with the constant threat of falling into the abyss of societal disdain. Growing up, I was no stranger to the harsh, unwelcoming realities of anti-black racism. As one of the few Black families in the area, my family and I were subjected to hostility and ignorance that left lasting impressions on my young mind. The neighborhood kids, with their limited English vocabulary, seemed to know only two words: “Black” and the N-word, which they wielded with cruel precision. Their chants followed us like a shadow, serving as a constant reminder of our perceived otherness. Even our dog wasn’t immune to their taunts.
Our backyard became a battlefield, littered with the refuse they tossed over our fence, a physical manifestation of their contempt. The physical altercations that ensued, from rock fights to fistfights, bred a survival-of-the-fittest mentality. This environment cultivated a deep-seated fear in me, so potent that I couldn’t even eat lunch at school, choosing instead to bring it home and hide it beneath my bed, safe from prying eyes.
As I grew older, I sought refuge in a career that allowed me to limit my interactions with others—accounting. It provided a sanctuary where I could focus on numbers and spreadsheets, away from judgmental gazes. Yet, safety was not synonymous with fulfillment. A part of me yearned for more—a desire to connect with others and share my story.
Then, a divine intervention occurred. One morning, I awoke to find the fear that had gripped me for decades was inexplicably gone. It felt like an invitation to step out of the shadows and into the light. With newfound courage, I embarked on a mission to uplift and support Black-owned businesses, starting a small YouTube channel dedicated to this cause. Though I began with just 11 subscribers, each one represented a new beginning.
A breakthrough moment came when a close friend introduced me to the African Diaspora News Channel, where founder Phillip Scott was seeking a Canadian contributor. Despite my lack of experience, my friend encouraged me to apply, convinced that I possessed the unique perspective Phillip sought. I reached out, shared my story, and, with guidance from his team, created a video that secured me the role. This opportunity opened doors I never imagined, including being a contributor, right here on The Daily Scrum News, speaking engagements and co-host roles, including a permanent spot on “The Heroine Show.”
This journey taught me invaluable lessons:
Embrace Your Past: Transform adversities into strength and inspiration.
Take the Leap: Don’t let fear stifle your dreams.
Build Connections: Seek communities and networks that offer support.
Stay Open to Opportunities: Embrace unexpected paths that align with your passion.
While my journey has been transformative, it’s crucial to acknowledge that everyone’s path is unique. Healing and growth can manifest in myriad ways, whether through art, activism, or other expressions. The key is to find what resonates with you and pursue it wholeheartedly.
One of the most empowering realizations has been understanding that it’s never too late to discover your passion and conquer your fears. Whether you’re in your 20s, 50s, or beyond, there’s always room for growth and new beginnings.
My story is a testament to the power of resilience and community. I invite you to reflect on your own journey and consider the possibilities that lie ahead. Would you like to explore how you can turn your challenges into opportunities for growth?
