A heavy silence has settled over Jamaica in the wake of recent devastation. While headlines have shifted to the next viral story, lives remain uprooted, families displaced, and communities continue the slow work of rebuilding. The island is still reeling, and the need for sustained support is urgent.
The “Shirt Off My Back” Campaign is a response to that ongoing need. It is more than a hashtag or a temporary collection drive. The initiative is built on compassion and sustained action and is led by Chef and Artist Roger Mooking, Olympian Donovan Bailey, and grassroots organizations including Hear 2 Help, Toronto Caribbean Newspaper, and Brothers Who Care. What sets this organization apart is that the effort does not stop after a month. Organizers are committed to providing long-term aid so the devastation is not simply overshadowed by palm trees and passing headlines.
The campaign mobilizes aid that reaches directly into the hands of people rebuilding their lives through trusted networks on the ground in Jamaica. Organizers emphasize that the country needs more than clothing, food, and water. Essential items such as toiletries, baby food, diapers, women’s sanitary products, hygiene items, and linens are critical to restoring dignity and helping families return to daily life.
The campaign began with a personal call that changed everything. One organizer recalls, “When I heard my mother’s voice tremble as she told me our family had lost everything, it lit a fire that could not be ignored. I reached out to Roger, and together we built something meant to last beyond sympathy and headlines, a six-month roadmap for real recovery.”
Organizers are asking the public to take action. Anyone who has experienced the warmth of Jamaica, its music, food, or spirit is encouraged to give intentionally and consistently.
Drop-off location is 1860 Jane Street, Toronto. Donations can be delivered on November 9th, November 16th, and November 30th, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
