Bath, Ontario – October 2, 2025 — Correctional Service Canada has confirmed the death of inmate Nicholas Shipman, 43, at Millhaven Institution’s Regional Treatment Centre. Shipman died while in custody on October 2, 2025. Officials stated that his next of kin have been notified and, as required by policy, the police and coroner have also been contacted. An internal review into the circumstances of his death will be conducted.

Shipman had been serving an 18-year sentence since March 10, 2022, for his role in a violent triple homicide that shook Ontario in 2018.

In October 2018, the bodies of Melissa Miller, who was seven months pregnant, Alan Porter, and Michael Jamieson were discovered in a pickup truck in Middlesex County, near the Oneida Nation of the Thames. The three had been killed in the Six Nations territory and transported from the scene. The killings were brutal, with Miller and Porter suffering fatal stab wounds while Jamieson was killed by a gunshot.

Shipman was originally charged with three counts of second-degree murder but later pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter. In March 2022, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with credit for time already served while awaiting trial.

The sentence sparked anger and frustration among the victims’ families, who argued it did not reflect the severity of the crimes. Community members were especially outraged over the death of Miller, who was carrying an unborn child at the time she was killed.

Shipman’s violent past was well documented. Court proceedings described him as having a long history of aggression and involvement in criminal activity. The triple homicide case marked the most shocking and devastating chapter in his record.

At the time of his death in custody, Shipman was housed at Millhaven’s Regional Treatment Centre, a facility designed for inmates requiring mental health care. The cause of death has not yet been made public, and the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

The deaths of Melissa Miller, Alan Porter, and Michael Jamieson remain a painful memory for the Six Nations community and beyond. Shipman’s own death now closes a chapter in a case that had left a deep mark on Ontario.
